Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies were on decline Wednesday, the day after the first debate of US presidential candidates who failed to incite any excitement among crypto enthusiasts.

Republican nominee and former President Donald Trump faced Democratic candidate and Vice President Kamala Harris on Tuesday in their first presidential debate, but they did not deliver new promises nor support for crypto policies.

Bitcoin, the world's largest cryptocurrency, was trading just above $57,000 at 9.24 a.m. EDT (1324GMT) after hitting as low as $56,200 after the debate.

Ethereum, the world's largest altcoin, was at $2,340 at the time after falling to $2,310 during the day.

The value of the cryptocurrency market stood at $2 trillion with a 0.1% daily loss. Bitcoin's share, known as dominance, was at 56.1%. Ethereum's was at 14%, according to CoinMarketCap.

Bitcoin climbed to as high as $69,992 on July 29, two days after Donald Trump laid out his plan to ensure that the country would be "the crypto capital of the planet and the Bitcoin superpower of the world."

Cryptocurrencies, however, saw a steep decline beginning Aug. 1 when recession fears sent global markets into a freefall.
