Climate activists block major street in central Berlin
Last Generation activists plan to continue their 'civil resistance' actions throughout the week
BERLIN
Three climate activists from Last Generation blocked a major thoroughfare near Hermannplatz in Berlin on Tuesday evening, disrupting traffic.
The activists hope to pressure the government to rush climate preservation efforts.
Berlin police said they were responding to around 10 disruptive actions in the afternoon, and trying to open roads.
“Our colleagues are at the scene or on their way to the scene. Please remain calm and do not intervene yourself,” police said on Twitter, to calm down angry drivers.
Around 700 police officers were deployed across Berlin to remove the protesters.
The Last Generation group activists are known for their extreme actions and radical protests to draw attention to climate change. They are planning to continue their “civil resistance” actions throughout the week.
The protesters are heavily criticizing the German government for not taking serious measures to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 Fahrenheit), but further investing in fossil fuel infrastructure, endangering the future of humankind.
