LONDON

Gylfi Sigurdsson, a player for Premier League football team Everton and Iceland's national team, has been arrested on suspicion of committing child sex offenses, according to media sources. Everton also suspended the player.

For legal reasons, British media reported the incident without giving his name, but Icelandic media, including mbl.is, named the player arrested as Sigurdson, who is 31.

“Officers arrested a 31-year-old man on Friday 16 July 2021 on suspicion of child sex offences,” said a statement from police in the northern city of Manchester.

“He is on police bail pending further enquiries.”

Everton also confirmed that a player was under investigation.

“Everton can confirm it has suspended a First-Team player pending a police investigation,” a club statement said.

“The Club will continue to support the authorities with their inquiries and will not be making any further statement at this time.”

The player was arrested on Friday and then released on bail, mbl.is reported.

A house search was carried out at the player's home earlier this month and items were seized, according to the reports.
