Panathinaikos shock Real Madrid 97-86 in Turkish Airlines EuroLeague

Greek club ends 11-year losing streak in Madrid; leaders Real Madrid suffer 1st home loss of 2023-24 EuroLeague season

ANKARA

Panathinaikos AKTOR Athens stunned Real Madrid 97-86 in a Thursday Turkish Airlines EuroLeague game to bag their first win in the Spanish capital since 2013.

Panathinaikos' Mathias Lessort led the Greens with 26 points to be the key player for an away win. He was also the game's top scorer at Madrid's WiZink Center.

The Athens club's US guard Kendrick Nunn scored 17 points, and Greek playmaker Kostas Sloukas added 16 points for the victors.

Real Madrid, who took their first home loss of the 2023-24 EuroLeague season, were led by Guerschon Yabusele as the French forward scored 18 points. His teammate Dzanan Musa had 16 points.

The Spanish club's French forward Fabien Causeur scored 13 points.

Turkish coach Ergin Ataman's Panathinaikos, who ended their 11-year losing streak in Madrid, improved to 17-10 to be third in the standings.

Leaders Real Madrid were handed their fifth loss in 27 games.

Turkish club Anadolu Efes, who are in the lower ranks, lost to Partizan Mozzart Bet Belgrade 100-90 in Serbia.

Serbian guard Aleksa Avramovic was on fire to score 30 points against the Istanbul team.

Anadolu Efes were led by Will Clyburn as the US forward had 17 points.

Partizan have a 13-14 win/loss record to be 11th in the table.

The clubs ranked seventh through 10th will advance to the play-in, which is a knockout phase prior to the playoffs, after the 34-game regular season.

The best six clubs in the EuroLeague standings will qualify for the playoffs.

Former champions Anadolu Efes are in 15th spot with 11 wins in 27 rounds.
