US stocks close with slight gains

US stock exchanges closed with slight gains Wednesday, despite opening in the red.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 15 points, or 0.04%, to finish the session at 39,127. The S&P 500 rose eight points, or 0.16%, to 5,477.

The Nasdaq, meanwhile, gained 87 points, or 0.49%, to 17,805.

The VIX volatility index, also known as the fear index, lost 2.26% to 12.55. The 10-year US Treasury yield climbed 2.23% to 4.430%.

The dollar index added 0.44% to 106.07, while the euro lost 0.33% to $1.0678 against the greenback.

Precious metals were in the red, with gold losing 0.92% to $2,297 per ounce and silver losing 0.48% to $28.77.

Oil prices were mixed, with global benchmark Brent crude rising 0.14% to $84.34, but US benchmark West Texas Intermediate falling 0.05% to $80.79.
